I understand what you mean when you say it's difficult to "filter out" color, for example, or a shape or time of the year or ?. I'm such a visual learner, and it's easier for me to render what's in front of me rather than modify it in a big way. Perhaps if I did more prepainting planning, some thumbnails and color sketches I could see the possibilities clearer.
