My hubby said I must have been painting fast and furious this morning as he pointed out the paint on my cheek.  And he was right.  This was done with a loose handling.  This poor little sunflower was struggling to hang on in the oppressive heat and dry conditions so I brought it inside to enjoy.

Here is how it might look framed.

I read the free e-book on my Kindle this past week called "Unselling - 22 strategies to win without selling" by Peter Bourke.  It got me to thinking and caused me to write and  have an e-mail conversation with my son about selling my art.  He has been in sales now for about 12 years.  Here is some insight that he gave me.


The truth is everything has to be sold.   And, without salespeople the farmer wouldn't sell his produce, [insert any manufacturing business] would close down and the artist would starve.  It doesn't matter how valuable an object is without someone selling it nothing happens.  In spreading the gospel Paul says to be all things to all people.  Can't think of a much better definition of what it means to be a salesman.  

I think a large part of your discomfort comes from how personal your item is.  It is like me selling my time as a teacher.  Because you are more valuable than any amount you could charge for your paintings it is easy to feel cheapened by any price you put on it.

As for justifying taking someones money for your art i guarantee no one is taking food off their table in order to buy your art.  And if they didn't spend some money with you they WILL spend their money somewhere else.  A new hot tub, a new tv, or new art.  

I would imagine most 'professional' artisans hire someone to sell their art for them for just this reason.  It is impossible for you to not take the selling process personally."

I think he is very wise in his analysis. ( he gets that from his dad).  What do you think?  Is it hard for you to sell your art?
