Next!

Here is my next challenge.  I have tried to paint this photo of my niece at least 3 times.  Maybe by starting with a better drawing this time will be different, as in successful!  She is a very beautiful woman both inside and out.

Here is the reference photo.  It is an indoor candid shot and is challenging because the light is coming from above.  Will do a couple more tweeks and then get out the oils.  Wish me luck with this one!

  1. Karla, can I make a couple of suggestions? I rarely do this but am hoping to see if you see what I see here. And if I'm right, catch you before you begin to paint in oil. One thing I notice is that the drawing has her chin a wee bit longer than the photo shows. And the second thing I see is that her lips are a bit wider than in the drawing. At least the right side that we can see. Notice how in the photo, her lips extend to about the center of her eyes? Beyond those two minor details, I am amazed at how well you are drawing! I haven't gotten past the drawing of the two profiles and/or the vase, depending on how you look at it in the book we're both reading. And yes indeed; your niece is a beauty! Can't wait to see the portrait!

  2. Good luck with your drawing Karla. I've been doing some drawing from photos recently and have been enjoying experimenting with shade. I found that I was staring at the photo for long periods. Here is the address if you would like to have a look.

  4. Thanks Sherry! I appreciate your tips. I did notice the chin issue when I saw the pic published on the blog, but I didn't notice the mouth. I will take another look at that.
