Purple Radish and some Blog Finds

I knew when I woke up this morning what I was going to paint.  My husband planted a new radish that is supposed to be a milder taste.  It still tastes hot to me!  Anyway even if I don't care for radishes' taste they are too beautiful to pass up as a portrait subject.

As is usually the case.  The supporting actors were more fascinating to me than the actual radish.  I loved the root, the shadow and the leaves.  Top lighting really enhanced these things.

Here is how it might look framed.

I want to pass along some things I came across in blog-land.

Julia Lundman's Blog has a great article on 5/3/12 about her experience with Sadie Valeri.  One thing that Julia will address in a later post will be "Which method of painting suits my temperament?"  This is actually something I have been contemplating this week.  I purchased Julian Merrow-Smith's book of Postcards from Provence.  I love, love his work.  He talks in the book about being a literal person.  I too think this describes me.  Thus, I think this is why I am attracted to realism in painting.

Another blog find was Posemaniacs.  There are quick drawing exercises that would be great to do as a warm-up for the day.  I was surprised how reasonable my drawings were with only 30 seconds to complete them.  I'm sure I will get better with practice.

And finally,  I was behind in reading Daniel Gerhartz instructional blog "Technical Insights from Not Too Far From Home.  If you haven't kept up or read it, be sure to check it out.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. Wonderful composition and I love how the black background really enhances the subject. I am not a big lover of radishes either but this one looks very inviting :-) Wish you a wonderful week end too.
