Blog Find of the Week

This is a photo and not a painting!

My blog find for this week is a photography blog.  It is called Life-n-Reflection.  I chose it because I was amazed at the "painterly" quality of the photos she is able to get by using a "soft texture" layer over her photos.  I'm not completely sure how this works but I know she sells the textures on Etsy for about $3.50 for a set of four.  This is particularly interesting to me because I know that landscape artists use this "filter" in their minds when they paint landscapes.  They filter out the veridian green and replace it with a softer quieter color.  I personally have a hard time doing that.  Maybe it will come with more experience.  And I know there are purists out there who only paint on-site and not from photos, but I thought this was an interesting thing that might be a good tool.

Isn't it kind of funny how some photographers try to get a painterly effect and some painters try to get a photographic effect?  But in the end it's all lovely!

  1. I agree Karla it would be a great tool! Yes there are so many styles of painting out but each have their merits.

  2. Excellent post, Karla. Very interesting and beautiful work. I wouldn't have guessed it's a photo. I understand what you mean when you say it's difficult to "filter out" color, for example, or a shape or time of the year or ?. I'm such a visual learner, and it's easier for me to render what's in front of me rather than modify it in a big way. Perhaps if I did more prepainting planning, some thumbnails and color sketches I could see the possibilities clearer. Thank you for the food for thought!
